Nicholas pushed open the door and stopped short. The air was thick with the scent of good food and roses. Oz had outdone himself for their anniversary. Nicholas saw the careful details—the chilled wine, the soft music, the petals leading toward the bedroom. Oz had planned a perfect evening, but Nicholas knew his mother was working late. He was supposed to be gone, giving them space.
He found Oz adjusting a candle, his broad shoulders silhouetted against the twilight window. The disappointment on Oz’s face was palpable. Nicholas moved closer, his own heart beating faster. He watched Oz’s hands, remembering their quiet strength. Maybe, Nicholas thought, stepping into the circle of warm light, he could offer Oz some comfort. The evening didn’t have to be wasted. A slow smile touched Nicholas’s lips as he saw the question dawn in Oz’s eyes.
